"ONE OF those CUSTOMERS"

Updated: Sep 27, 2021

I'm usually very decisive...maybe it's because I've been planning this house for SO LONG or because I'm so invested in making sure everything is just right, but I'm being a seriously wishy-washy person when it comes to cabinets and floors. Poor sweet, patient Denise at the Carpet House. She's going to qualify for sainthood by the time I'm done.

The Cabinet layout was easy (thanks to Denise). Jarred's "must haves" were a cooktop in the island with a big drawer to the left for his cooking utensils and a trash can in the cabinet to the right. Check. Denise suggested a spice pullout to the right of the cooktop, which was perfect. Everything he needs right at arm's length. We wanted seating for six around the island, so we expanded the island quite a bit. The hardest part was balancing the cabinets along the front wall with the windows. We tried full cabinets (too heavy), floating shelves (too naked) and finally settled on a plate rack to the left of the sink. I also had very clear style ideas - I wanted very clean lines, so I chose Timberlake's "Sonoma" line - a shaker style cabinet... Square posts for the island... Very clean, simple moulding at the top of the cabinets... and a simple eased edge for the granite countertops. Picking the finishes for said cabinets and the floor to match has not been quite as easy.

Round One (pictured at right):

Base (lower) Cabinets: Timberlake Sonoma in "Maple Slate"

Ganite: Glacier White

Upper Cabinets: Timberlake Sonoma in Painted "Harbor"

When I ended up setting my cabinet samples down on a sample of barnwood I thought "Oh my gosh, this pulls together so beautifully!" It pulls brown, grey and almost blue tones from the cabinets. I showed Mom, who is helping me with selections and she said "Yeah. That was the one Denise recommended that you thought was too light." Whoops.

Round Two (pictured left):

Base (lower) Cabinets: Timberlake Sonoma in "Maple Slate"

Upper Cabinets: Timberlake Sonoma in Painted "Harbor"

Finally, I found another sample that I liked the look of (Dorian Oak ) and since Mom had to do selections with another customer, she did some homework for me. We also tried the Maple Truffle color to see how that would look as a base. The darker cabinet color pictured below is the same from the two photos above (crazy, right?)

Round Three (pictured below):

Floors: Dorian Oak is on the left and Colonial Plank Barnwood on the right.

The fact that the Maple Slate finish seems to be nearly impossible to photograph does not making sharing this an easy task...and photos are not great for choosing anyway, as you'll see with the posted pictures verses the website samples below (in order: Colonial Plank Barnwood, Sullivan Dorian Oak, Cyrus Fauna):

As for cabinet finishes, I want darker, stained base cabinets ("Maple Slate" which has walnut grey tones or Maple Truffle which has warmer slightly redder tones) and lighter painted wall cabinets ("Harbor" which has a soft gray color in person, or "Linen" which is white.) These are the finishes we are considering the finishes below:

Here is an example of a kitchen done in the Maple Slate:
