I've watched trends come and go over the years, and what I've learned is that you have to do what makes YOU happy. What is in style now, may not be in 10 years...but eventually it all cycles back around.
I love the wide craftsman style window and door trim. There is something about it when set against a darker colored siding that just grabs my attention. I selected the Certainteed Mainstreet Clapboard style 5" siding in "Charcoal Gray" (pictured here under the warm lights of our selections center, it's not actually that yellow) with white trim and a Pewterwood colored roof and Englert " Charcoal Gray" metal accent at the garage eyebrow.
I opted for the clapboard style vs the dutchlap because it is more true to the original farmhouse styles present in our area. We're using board & batten style vinyl siding in the same color in the gable areas to add some visual interest. Both will be in the same Charcoal Gray color. I chose white for the corner trim. We usually match the corner trim with the siding color, but I've seen some darker siding with white trim and I loved the dramatic look (see photo at left for inspiration.)
Exterior Accent Color
While my major colors are very neutral, I love using bold colors to accent with. My front door will be stained, but for the remaining exterior doors, I've selected a bold color: Benjamin Moore's "Venezuelan Sea." Oh by the way, Benjamin Moore has a front door color visualizer...which is GENIUS!
My actual front door is a Therma-tru Smooth Star Craftsman 2-Panel Style No. S4813-SDLF1 (left) with the Craftsman flat trim.
I wanted more light for the other exterior doors and chose a 3/4 lite option, Therma-tru Smooth Star S2200.
